A new grille and headlights, increased cab packages, anti-slip windscreen cleaning steps and interior trim enhancements are the obvious changes to the new Volvo FM, which is still aimed at the regional distribution market.

New Volvo FM is more than just a strong lookerBeyond that, it's about bolstering Volvo image in terms of strength, efficiency, comfort and safety.

As Claes Nilsson, president Europe division at Volvo Trucks, puts it: "So much is already built into the Volvo FM … it was a matter of further fine-tuning, based on feedback we have received from customers."

However, from an engineering perspective, Volvo also says that the 13-litre engine, in combination with the I-Shift transmission, reduces fuel consumption by up to 3% compared to the earlier version, while offering power output up to 500hp and peak torque of 2,500 Nm.

And Volvo says that the alternative 11-litre engine gives "high load capacity, while offering high performance and impressive fuel efficiency". Both the D13 and D11 engines are also available in EEV (enhanced environmental vehicle) variants.

Also, larger steel fuel tanks are mounted higher in the frame are now available on construction chassis, offering almost the same ground clearance as current tanks.
