Loughborough-based ETS Distribution took the Eco-Fleet of the Year prize at the 2010 Brake Fleet Safety Awards, with the judges recognising its pioneering telematics in promoting safe and fuel-efficient driving.
 "The programme we have developed focuses chiefly on driver development and improving fleet utilisation," explains ETS Distribution's operations director, Paul Wreaves.
"Firstly, we use the [telematics] system to benchmark our drivers. We then use this data to create a personal development programme of safety and economy targets for each member of the team. To help drivers achieve their objectives on the road, we then use MiX Telematics RIBAS system as an ever-present 'coach in the cab'."
RIBAS scores revving, idling, braking, acceleration and speeding. But Wreaves says that MiX's Fleet Manager also provides the tools this haulier needs to optimise fleet utilisation.
"Our traffic team constantly monitors the position of every vehicle in the fleet and uses that information to schedule deliveries and collections in the most efficient manner possible," he explains.
Wreaves says tangible benefits have included: a 3% year-on-year reduction in fuel usage, despite mileage growth of 7%, which equates to an overall fuel saving of 15% since the introduction of the fleet management system; a corresponding reduction in carbon emissions; a 30% reduction in accidents; and a 20% reduction in insurance premiums.
