James Armstrong, currently aftersales director for Scania (GB), has been appointed managing director of Scania South East Asia. Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Armstrong will take up his new role on 1 September 2010.

People news for August 2010Succeeding him is Mark Grant, currently Bus, Coach and Engine sales director for Scania (GB). Since joining the organisation 17 years ago, Grant has worked in a number of positions in aftersales, contracts, customer services, latterly overseeing the development of Scania's UK passenger carrying vehicles and industrial/marine engines operations.

In turn, Grant is to be succeeded by Tony Tomsett, who is being promoted from his current position as general manager for service operations. Another long serving staffer, with 13 years of experience at Scania, Tomsett has also managed the company's commercial and technical training functions.

MAN's supervisory board in Germany has extended Dr Georg Pachta-Reyhofen's contract as CEO by five years to 2016. Reyhofen has been a member of the MAN SE executive board since July 2006 and CEO of both MAN SE and MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG since January 1 this year, following promotion from his earlier position as chairman of the executive board of MAN Diesel SE.

Gavin Scott, the Freight Transport Association's head of policy for Scotland, retired on 5 July, after more than 30 years based at the association's office in Stirling. Scott has been the voice of FTA in Scotland for the past decade, influencing several high-profile decisions, such as the FTA's demand that the second Forth crossing should be a bridge.

Chris MacRae will take over as FTA's new head of policy for Scotland. MacRae, from Glasgow, has been with the association for 17 years and is well known in the industry, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Changes to the management structure for MAN Truck & Bus UK Ltd see Des Evans resume his role as CEO, and Michael Latham take over as director, branch operations, responsible for MAN's 18 workshops.

Another person moving is Vince Welsh, who leaves the company's Bus & Coach Division to become UK aftersales director.

Finally, Sandy Millar becomes UK sales director, responsible for MAN direct retail sales.

As of July 1, 2010, Rob Appels has been appointed to director corporate communications of DAF Trucks NV. Appels succeeds Ron den Engelsen, who has decided to pursue a career outside the company.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT) has appointed Donna Cresswell as chief operating officer. Says Cresswell: "The transport sector is an absolutely vital ingredient in the daily lives of the whole population and we need to ensure that CILT is as important to the passenger transport and transport planning professionals responsible for its operation. I hope to be able to contribute to that process."

Michael Mohan has joined JCB as group engineering director. Mohan moves to the construction equipment manufacturer from Jaguar Land Rover, where he was strategic business office director.
Derby-based Zak Gadsby has kicked off his career as a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle technician in fine style, by landing a top prize for heavy truck apprentices. The 21-year-old, who works for East Midlands dealer Mertrux, won the title for 'Outstanding Technical Student – Heavy Vehicle' from IMI Awards, at its annual event for outstanding automotive achievers.
