As part of the move to type approval, the Department for Transport intends to ditch the sideguard exemptions available for dustcarts, tipping trucks and trailers.
According to Allan McKenzie, deputy head and senior manager for Vehicle Legislation Public Policy at the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), DfT also wants to withdraw the exemption from rear under-run regulations on tipping trucks and trailers, while partially withdrawing the exemption for concrete mixers.
Agreeing that the plans, which are currently the subject of informal consultation, are bound to worry many tipper operators, McKenzie adds: "That list also includes spray suppression and front under-run."
SMMT is requesting comments on the proposed changes to the current exemption rules, which will apply in the upcoming IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) test for these heavy vehicles.
"We are consulting with our members on the full list of exemptions and their implications before replying to the DfT," comments McKenzie.
