At Transport for London, our goal is to keep the capital working and moving.. Our London Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Policy Team plays its part by developing, implementing and maintaining vehicle regulations, policy and standards for a passenger carrying taxi and private hire fleet of around 100,000 vehicles. Setting standards for vehicle and passenger safety, introducing new vehicle designs and technologies and improving passenger accessibility – they do all of this, and more. You’ll be part of a small team with a big impact

An opportunity to be part of a small specialist vehicle policy/engineering team that has a big impact, you’ll work on some genuinely exciting projects. Indeed, you’ll help approve proposals for everything from revisions to taxi and private hire vehicle licensing requirements, including the first electric taxis, through to new low emissions technologies (e.g. hydrogen fuel cells, low emissions/hybrid technologies).You’ll regularly liaise with key partners such as fleet operators, individual drivers, vehicle manufacturers, design companies and technology suppliers as you deliver some truly innovative and strategic initiatives.

You’ll get to make the most of your expertise

You’ll need a BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent in motor vehicle technology or a similar discipline. You’ll also need vehicle repair/fleet operations experience gained within the automotive industry plus knowledge of vehicle regulations and legislation and various vehicle type testing requirements. An understanding of taxi and private hire legislation and licensing policies would be useful, but is not essential. You must, however, be up to speed with automotive design, ergonomics, homologation, construction and low carbon, low emissions technologies, including passenger and wheelchair vehicle accessibility standards. You will be well organised, with good research skills and have an innovative approach to problem solving and adept at building relationships.
