To succeed in this key position you must be a natural leader who is a qualified engineer, dynamic and self-motivated, to control all the engineering resources within your bus garage and to ensure sufficient vehicles are always available to the required standard of reliability, presentation and condition for operational requirements.

As the capital's largest bus operator, running a quarter of the network, our success is measured by the quality of our services. We employ 7,000 staff across 17 locations serving 120 routes with 2,200 vehicles.

Your working environment will be essentially fluid, with a base structure of planned maintenance allowing for irregular or unusual events. You must be capable of clearly analysing and defining problems and of making the correct decisions. The areas in which your good judgement will be essential are wide and varied, ranging from technical problems through personnel and local negotiations to stock and budgetary control.

• Controlling and monitoring the principal engineering functions of the garage.

• Negotiation with local Trade Union representatives.

• Maintenance of garage premises, together with all garage plant and equipment.

• Management, development and training of staff

• Management of contractors.

You will have sound practical experience in people management and a thorough knowledge of all engineering agreements, procedures and rules affecting a bus garage.

With refined leadership qualities, you must be capable of motivating people and commanding respect, as a team member within the management structure.

Working under pressure without close supervision you will show initiative and flexibility in dealing with situations as they arise and be capable of understanding and communicating to others the wider aspects of the business. The ability to use or learn modern communications and computer technology is essential.

As a nominated Transport Manager, you will be a member of the IRTE or have another relevant professional qualification and hold or be prepared to gain the NEBOSH general certificate and CPC. You will also be expected to successfully complete assessment for Engineering Manager accreditation by an organisation such as the CPT.
