520 Ford Transit vans heading for British Gas 16 May 2013

Ford Transit has been chosen by British Gas for its central heating engineers, who deemed the van the best vehicle for the job.

British Gas has now ordered 520, also citing the Transit's 125bhp 2.2-litre TDCi diesel engine performance and commenting on the vehicle's large load capacity, which enables awkward loads to be accommodated securely inside the vans.

The energy supplier has gone for the 330 medium wheelbase, medium roof vehicles, equipped with air-conditioning, speed limiter and winter tyres.

There will also be 32 four-wheel drive variants, located around the country for use in severe weather.

Cost savings were achieved by recycling the bespoke racking systems fitted to British Gas' existing Transit models.

"It was a no-brainer really," says Colin Marriott, fleet general manager, British Gas. "The vans used by our central heating installation engineers are a vital resource for them and they love the Transit... When we asked, they said: 'Give us the same again, please'."

The vans also meet the company's vehicle whole life cost model, which also determines the replacement timing for its vehicles.
