£5m funding to cut public sector vehicle emissions 10 September 2014

More than 1,000 local authority vehicles, ranging from buses to fire engines, should improve their green credentials, following transport minister Baroness Kramer's announcement of successful bidders for the £5 million Clean Vehicle Technology Fund.

Seventeen have been awarded grants for a range of pollution-reducing technologies which will now be fitted to a total of 1,080 commercial vehicles. The DfT (Department for Transport) is also providing an additional £50,000 to help the authorities monitor their clean technology projects.

"We received imaginative applications from local authorities across England for vehicles including buses, taxis, vans, fire engines and ambulances," comments Baroness Kramer.

"The funding we are providing will result in real public health benefits, while supporting skilled jobs and economic growth in the environmental technologies industries."

The 2014 Clean Vehicle Technology Fund builds on last year's Clean Bus Technology Fund pilot, which awarded £7.3 million across 26 local authorities to fund the modification of over 500 buses.

As part of the requirements of the CVTF, successful projects are required to monitor the effectiveness of the technologies and provide a useful learning tool to other local authorities considering green vehicle upgrades.
