Actros long wheelbase sparks interest from Marwood Electrical12 February 2014

Streetlighting equipment supplier Marwood Electrical has taken delivery of a Euro 6 Mercedes-Benz 18-tonne Actros with the new 6700mm extra-long wheelbase option.

The longer wheelbase means Kent-based Marwood no longer has to extend chassis to accommodate high-volume bodies.

The Actros 1824L – Marwood's first Euro 6 vehicle – was supplied by dealer Sparshatts of Kent. It has a StreamSpace sleeper cab and rear air suspension, and is powered by a 240bhp engine with an eight-speed PowerShift automated transmission.

"The new, longer wheelbase suits us admirably," says Tony Walker, Marwood's warehouse and distribution manager. "We can now fit our big box body without having to extend the chassis, as we've done in the past."

The latest acquisition joins a 12-strong fleet of rigids, all Mercedes-Benz models. The fleet includes nine 18-tonners, a 7.5-tonner and a pair of 26-tonne tippers with cranes, which are used to collect old streetlighting equipment from customers and transport it to approved recycling centres.

The latest vehicle will cover 80,000km a year and is supplied with a five-year repair and maintenance contract.

Marwood has since ordered another Actros to the same specification, as well as a 7.5-tonne Atego.
