Acumen expands fleet of longer semi trailers26 January 2015

Acumen Distribution has further expanded its fleet of longer semi-trailers (LSTs), taking delivery two months ago of four more SDC semi-trailers.

All are 15.65 metre, 4.278 metre high tri-axle trailers with aero roof scoops to the rear plus vortex generators, full length side skirts and flush steel rear doors.

They were specified with BPW Eco-plus low-maintenance hubs and single-axle Tridec 32 degree command (turntable-based) rear-steers. They also have the Haldex Info centre diagnostics.

The new trailers have been built with Lawrence David pillarless curtainsider bodies to the EN XL 12642 standard. They have 28mm Keruing floors with Omega Steel sections and use Roland curtains with 300mm wear bands to top and bottom.

Since Acumen began using LSTs in 2012, it has grown its fleet from an initial four LSTs to 12.

Over the last 12 months the haulier says it has reduced the number of trips on its Sunderland to Wednesbury return trip by 150 – some 60,000 miles – while its Redditch-Middleton route has seen 29,964 miles of savings.

The new trailers, which are being used between Sunderland and Telford, have already cut mileage by 15%, meaning 4,250 miles.

"The longer-semi trailers are having a positive impact for our customers and the environment," says Chris Doughty, managing director of Acumen Logistics.

"Not only are we decreasing traffic congestion and providing greater operational efficiency, but we are also saving 128.61 tonnes of CO2 emissions and reduced our mileage last year by a staggering 91,214 miles."
