Alfa Travel drives up safety and driver retention with telematics07 August 2019

Alfa Travel is reporting a significant reduction in vehicle collisions and improvement in driver retention since equipping its 48-strong coach fleet with video telematics, from Lytx.

The Lancashire-based operator installed the Lytx DriveCam Event Recorder in the fleet in February 2018.

“It is extremely difficult to brief our drivers face to face because they’re on tour all the time and don’t return to a depot,” says Paul Bull, Alfa Travel’s operations director. “We needed a solution that would work for us remotely – and this does.”

Footage and data from the recorders is delivered to Alfa’s fleet management team via a new user interface. Driver-trainers have all the necessary details at their fingertips so they can see, at a glance, which risky driving behaviours need to be addressed.

Since embarking on the Lytx driver safety programme, the results have been dramatic: highway collisions have almost halved, down to 0.53 per 100,000km; late response incidents are down by 58%; there has been an 84% drop in failure to wear seatbelts; and a 75% improvement in driver retention.

“I can see a point where technology like DriveCam will be built into every large vehicle,” Bull predicts. “It’s becoming an essential part of how you support drivers and keep them safe, and they’re are starting to expect it.”
