Amberon trials maintenance service for 330-strong fleet01 June 2015

Traffic management company Amberon has embarked on a three-month pilot of a maintenance management service for its rapidly growing 330-strong fleet.

The Paignton-based business has 17 depots in England and Wales, and expects the trial of Fleet Service GB's (FSGB's) offering to result in a full contract across its operation, which offers 24/7 temporary traffic lights to local authorities and utility companies.

Amberon's fleet has doubled in the last 18 months, and now includes mostly 3.5-tonne flatbed vehicles, as well as 20 HGVs and 20 company cars.

The out-of-hours service sees FSGB's call centre handle an average of 150 calls a month between 6pm and 7am. On receiving a call – whether for planned service or unplanned emergency activity – staff direct the work to the nearest available duty engineers.

Amberon's general manager Terry Musson says: "Growth of the fleet meant managing it became a full-time role, rather than one aspect of my role. Therefore, we have recruited a full-time fleet manager and are also now using the expertise of FSGB."

"FSGB is a new venture and our partnership is in its infancy, but the out-of-hours service provided is working very well."

The light commercial vehicles cover high annual mileages (typical 39,000 a year) and are used on stop-start operations, so they are serviced every 15,000 miles irrespective of manufacturer intervals. Additionally, regular vehicle inspections help to efficiently manage the replacement of wear and tear parts such as brake pads and discs.
