ATE van conversion helps rescue new rescue service 23 November 2012

Wolverhampton-based ATE Truck and Trailer Sales helped save the day for the recently formed Leicestershire Search and Rescue service by providing a temporary mobile command centre.

LEICSAR is a voluntary organisation and had been recruiting and training members ready to go active later this month (November 2012).

However, unit commander, ex-police officer John Howells, and vice chairman, fire-fighter Andy Spry, had failed to find sponsors for the command vehicle – so ATE stepped in with a 2004 Iveco van, formally used to carry prisoners.

"We had been going to convert the van so it could go back into commercial use, but it can easily be adapted to become a command vehicle," comments Allan Evans, commercial director of ATE Truck and Trailer Sales.

"Those involved in search and rescue are all unpaid volunteers and the directors of ATE are delighted to be able to support the new unit being established in Leicestershire, where we also operate," he adds.

As part of its donation ATE is also putting the van through its MOT and giving it six months road tax.

A grateful John Howells says: "We had another vehicle but it proved to be unsuitable. This van is perfect, and once we have kitted it out we will be good to go into active service."
