Bowmans signs up for new Volvo Tridem04 July 2018

Waste management and road contractor Bowmans has taken delivery of a Volvo FH13-540 Tridem rigid – its first Volvo vehicle in 24 years.

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, the Fort William-based operator’s new addition is

an 8x4 chassis in Tridem rear-steer specification.

It is powered by a D13K Euro VI engine rated at 533bhp, coupled to an I-Shift 12-speed automated manual transmission system.

The FH is specified with a flat roof Sleeper cab, including Drive+ and Media+ packages. A 10-tonne front axle bolsters the Tridem rigid, which is fitted with Boughton hooklift gear. A VBG coupling also caters for haulage of a tri-axle drawbar trailer.

Michael Bowman, commercial director, says: “The last Volvo FH on our fleet was a tractor unit in 1994, which was used for general haulage. The company was keen to try out an 8x4 Tridem specification for its business, as we usually operate traditional eight-wheelers.

“Collecting and delivering skips from our customers’ premises means manoeuvrability is a critical factor. The Tridem rear-steer improves access and reduces the tyre wear.”

The FH is also fitted with a four-camera, 360-degree recording system, supplied and fitted by Banlaw Systems, Glasgow.

Bowmans will carry out six-weekly inspections at its own workshop and has opted for a five-year Volvo Gold R&M contract.
