BPW drums up favour with Knights Of Old trailer axles 19 August 2013

Knights of Old has recently taken delivery of 60 trailers – part of an order for 72 placed with SDC earlier this year, the remainder of which will be delivered in December.

Kelvin Gingell, technical director at this Northamptonshire-based transport and logistics operator, states that all were specified with BPW drum brake axles, which include its low-maintenance ECO hub system.

"In a time sensitive environment, where customer service is key to maintaining the sustainability of the business, we want to be operating with the most reliable and cost effective equipment," explains Gingell.

"It is critical that the level of vehicle downtime is kept to a minimum, which is why we have chosen BPW's ECO drum brake," he continues.

"It is important to us that our service provider can work efficiently with our equipment and the low maintenance of this particular axle type is testament to the reliability of BPW axles."

Gingell says that drum brakes are now Knights of Old's preferred choice and adds that BPW's ECO drum brake is fitted to 85% of the fleet.

TruckEast, which maintains the Knights of Old fleet and was involved in the trailer specification, favours BPW for several reasons.

The dealership cites reliability, ease of maintenance and availability of parts. It also states that this low-maintenance running gear ultimately means less downtime.

Coupled with BPW's ECO Hub system, servicing and downtime are cut by more than 50%, it insists.

And by way of example, the dealer says that whereas generally it can take up to eight hours to replace the brake linings on a standard tri-axle trailer, with the ECO Drum brake the job can be performed in less than half of that.
