Caledonian goes for major MAN tractor fleet upgrade 15 December 2010

Aberdeen-based palletised freight specialist Caledonian Logistics has taken delivery of MAN tractor units and middleweight trucks worth £1.6 million.

The new fleet comprises 12 TGX 26.440BLS 6x2 tractors, two 26.540BLS 6x2 tractive units and nine TGM 18.250 BL 4x2 18 tonners, with MAN Bodyline curtain-sided bodywork.

The 540bhp units were acquired on two-year MAN contract hire packages, while the 440s and the 18 tonners are on four year contract agreements. Almost all are fleet replacements.

Company director Derek Mitchell explains that the 540bhp TGXs are running on Caledonian's daily Aberdeen to Lichfield operation, clocking 4,500 miles per week. He says the high-powered units were specified to minimise journey times.

Mitchell also alludes to MAN's Fleet Management system, which has been fitted on all the trucks to help ensure VOSA compliance. And he mentions MAN EcoStyle – the driver performance package that provides real time data on driving performance and profitability.

Caledonian already has two 08 plate MAN 18 tonners and four 7.5 tonners, although Mitchell says it was the performance of its two 09 plated TGX tractors that led to the decision for the wholesale MAN order.

"We know the MAN product quite well," comments Mitchell, "and the 09 TGXs really sealed it for us. So far, the new MANs are performing very well and we're looking forward to MAN Fleet Management helping us make great savings on primarily fuel use, but also administration."
