Callinan Coaches extends tyre life by 20% with Michelin25 July 2018

Galway-based Callinan Coaches is reporting lower running costs after adopting a regrooving policy for its fleet of coaches fitted with Michelin X Multiway 3D tyres.

The operator’s in-house technicians regroove tyres once they reach 3-4mm of remaining tread, which extends tyre life by an average of two months – or an additional 60,000km per tyre.

After experiencing damage problems with a competitor brand, Callinan Coaches trialled the X Multiway 3D tyres. The result, reports the operator, was less damage and returns of 300,000km before needing to be replaced.

“Once we realised that tyre life could be significantly increased through regrooving, we put that to the test and we’ve made it standard practice across the fleet,” says Tommy Callinan, owner at Callinan Coaches.

“We’re now routinely seeing tyres clocking up 360,000km before being replaced, thanks to the additional layer of base rubber built into every new Michelin tyre as standard, which has a great impact on running costs.”

The Michelin fitments also come with a free accidental tyre damage guarantee for Callinan’s 58-strong VanHool fleet.
