Cenex fleet analysis tool to help transport managers 02 March 2012

CENEX, the UK's first Centre of Excellence for low carbon vehicle technologies, has announced the availability of its Fleet Carbon Reduction Tool (FCRT).

Designed to analyse the performance of various transport fuels and technology options in real-world fleet operations, this simulation tool is aimed at fleet managers.

The system looks at duty cycles and performs whole life cost modelling to help managers decide which combination of vehicles will prove both operationally practical and financially beneficial.

Robert Evans, CEO of Cenex, makes the point that standard whole life cost modelling already indicates that there is a vast difference in the operating costs of conventionally fuelled, low carbon and electric vehicles.

With factors to consider including duty cycle, purchase price, depreciation, low-carbon incentives and ongoing fuel and maintenance costs, he states that managers need all the help they can get in choosing the right commercial vehicles.

"With the new and emerging generation of low-carbon vehicles, fleet decision makers have an alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles that can suit a wide range of applications," states Evans.

"However, given their range and recharging requirements, drive cycle-based whole life cost modelling is essential for their successful economic and operational integration into day-to-day operations," he continues.

"Our Fleet Carbon Reduction Tool can help fleet managers identify which mix of transport fuels and technology options makes operational and financial sense."

A number of large fleet operators, including Coca Cola Enterprises, have already used Cenex's expertise to assess the best mix of vehicles to be introduced into fleet operations. Following a successful trial to assess the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs, Coca Cola Enterprises has invested in 14 Biomethane powered vehicles.
