Chambers aims high with low-entry Mercedes-Benz Econic24 November 2010

Chambers Waste Management reports satisfaction to date with its first full-sized low-entry cab truck – a Mercedes-Benz 26-tonne Econic 2629LL.

"We wanted to try a low cab for health and safety reasons – getting in and out is going to be a lot easier for our crews," explains Peter Chambers, chairman and managing director of the Guildford-based recycling and waste management firm.

And he adds: "There are a lot of Econics on the road these days and the product has been around for long enough to have proved its reliability and suitability for the job.

This Econic has been fitted with a a mid-steer axle, for increased manoeuvrability, as well as a Geesink Norba compactor body and a lift for handling 1,100-litre commercial wheelie bins.

The truck also has on-board weighing to monitor the precise weight of the bin being emptied, and is currently being used to collect dry recyclables from factories, industrial units and offices within 30 miles of Guildford.

Chambers says the new Econic is a 'seed' vehicle and that, subject to satisfactory performance, the waste contractor will be ordering more. "These are still early days, of course, but the initial signs are certainly very encouraging," he says.
