Charles Saunders weighs in with Isuzu Forward 11-tonners28 March 2017

Charles Saunders Food Service has expanded its fleet with the addition of 10 Isuzu Forward 11-tonne rigids, part of a strategy to move its fleet from 7.5-tonners to 11-tonners.

The Bristol-based operator’s new additions are all Isuzu Forward F110.210 4 x2 rigids with Easyshift automatic transmission – and, says the operator, they offer the “perfect balance of payload and power”.

The trucks are fitted with Solomon multi-compartment refrigerated bodies with front side loading door access, Carrier Supra MT refrigeration systems and rear under slung Dhollandia tail lifts. The trucks also have automatic cab lighting, an eight side-angle camera system with audible beep for an enhanced awareness of cyclists and a lane detection system.

The 35-strong fleet already includes two Isuzu 7.5-tonners and, after a multi-marque evaluation, the operator chose Isuzu for the larger payload vehicles.

“The new Isuzu 11-tonne rigids have a payload of over 4.2 tonnes, which is ideal for our multi-drop business as it allows us to deal with both large and small customers using the same delivery vehicle,” says Colin Bardsley, operations manager.

He adds: “With the new Isuzus, we can supply customers with a selection of frozen, chilled and ambient products all delivered on one vehicle, whereas previously we had to use multiple vehicles for the delivery of food and non-food products.”

The slim cab design is also useful, says Bardsley, for deliveries in rural areas.

Eight of the 10-strong order are already in operation; the final two will be delivered in May. All are supplied by dealer AK Commercials with a seven-year R&M contract.
