Charlton bodies tip the balance for residual value05 November 2013

Essex-based TMC Haulage is standardising its tipper fleet with Charlton SuperLite bodies in a bid to maximise the residual value of the trucks when they are sold on.

Mounted on 360bhp Scania chassis, the all-steel 15cu.m bodies are claimed to be the lightest all-steel bodies in their class, so payload is maximised. TMC says they are also very durable, not least because of their wear-resistant floors.

According to managing director Ian Devenish, TMC maximises the lifecycle value of its tippers by focusing specifically on the initial specification.

"These days, we operate a rolling vehicle replacement programme and, to do that well, we need to be able to sell our trucks easily, and get the best possible value," he explains.

"There's always a steady local demand for our used tippers… Therefore, it's vital that we get the overall spec of the vehicle right, both for us when running it and for later when we sell it on."

Miles Overton, TMC's transport manager, says the tipper body "delivers real value for us". And he adds: "We think the Charlton-bodied Scania delivers the best possible whole-life economics."

Other features of the Superlite include: an air-operated automatic tailgate and front-to-back electric sheeting, so the driver doesn't have to leave the cab; and a curved interior tipper floor to help discharge all types of load, quickly and cleanly.

Six new Charlton tippers have joined the TMC fleet in the last 12 months, with six more on order for delivery next year – two of which will have cranes and grabs.
