CILT launches vision for transport planning to 2035 02 October 2014

CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) has published its 'Vision for Transport Planning' with the Transport Planning Society (TPS) – setting out challenges for the UK over the next 20 years and the role of planners.

Taking a view to 2035, the report focuses on how the UK can benefit to from transport planning's influence – ranging from improving economic performance to combating climate change and improving public health.

The report provides a view of the central and local government structures and policies likely to be needed, skills required for transport planners and associated support.

Report author Martin Richards argues for the creation of a national spatial planning strategy, with input from all relevant government departments. This, he says, would set the lead for local authorities to fund and control transport systems, while also developing complementary local plans.

"A revival of sustained economic growth and rising population will create additional pressures on our transport networks over the next 20 years," states Richards.

"It's therefore more vital than ever that there is a flourishing transport planning profession, supported at national and local level, to plan and recommend coherent spatial strategies that provide the transport networks and national and local connectivity we need."

Richards believes that, as well as supporting a growing economy and efficient movement of people and goods, there is "potential to capitalise more effectively on the exceptional range of benefits transport can deliver".

Too often this has been overlooked in policymaking and planning, he argues, to the detriment of the UK's towns and cities.

The report has been prepared as part of CILT's Vision 2035 initiative and sits alongside other reports on transport matters.
