Citroen adds micro-hybrid drivetrain to Berlingo Euro 5 vans 31 October 2011

Citroën's new Five Star, 'business class' Euro 5 LCV programme includes its e-HDi Airdream micro-hybrid drivetrain for the new diesel-powered vans.

The hybrid is being fitted to the six most fuel-efficient and lowest emissions Berlingo Euro 5 vans, which have combined cycle fuel consumption figures up to 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 123g/km.

Scott Michael, Citroën's commercial vehicle operations manager, says: "Citroën has developed [this] programme to maximise the environmental and productivity potential of its advanced HDi technology."

And he adds: "The e-HDi Airdream micro-hybrid drivetrain will provide customers with even more cost saving and environmental advantages, thanks to its improvement in combined cycle fuel economy by up to 19% and an amazing emissions reduction of up to 17.5%."

The micro-hybrid incorporates the company's latest Euro 5 HDi 90 diesel engine, which develops 90bhp at 4,000rpm and a peak torque of 159lb.ft at 1,500rpm. The engine is equipped with Stop & Start technology, which uses a micro-hybrid starter/generator to restart the engine quickly and smoothly.

Citroën's system also features regenerative braking to recover and store energy that would otherwise be lost when slowing down or braking.

e-HDi Airdream Berlingo vans, which are priced from £12,795, are available as L1 625 X and LX or L2 750 X and LX models, with a choice of five-speed manual or 6-speed automated manual EGS6 transmission.

Other newcomers to the Five Star, 'business class' Euro 5 LCV programme include Euro 5 Dispatch and Relay ranges.

The new Euro 5 Dispatch range includes an HDi 90 and a new, more powerful HDi 125 diesel engine. In Euro 5 format the HDi 90 engine has seen its CO2 reduced from 191g/km to 182g/km and its peak torque rating reduced to just 1500rpm for improved driveability. Fuel economy on the combined cycle has also been improved by 4.2% to 40.9mpg.

As for the Relay Euro 5, this van range now includes the widest choice of engines ever offered for this model, with HDi engines ranging in power from 110 to 180hp. The Relay Euro 5 range includes a new HDi 110 engine with a six-speed gearbox, which replaces the HDi 100 five-speed drivetrain previously available in Euro 4 models.

Similarly, the Euro 4 HDi 120 engine has been replaced by a new, more powerful HDi 130 diesel. A new HDi 150 engine has also been added to the range. The Euro 5 HDi 180 engine is the most powerful model available in the Relay range.
