Clive Price Transport wins Michelin Scania R Series 01 June 2015

Clive Price Transport has won a new Euro 6 Scania R-Series tractor unit, built to its own specification, in this year’s Michelin competition – another vehicle replacement for its 12-strong fleet.

The Hereford-based bulk haulier, which pulls tipping trailers, was entered into the competition after it bought sets of Michelin X MultiWay 3D tyres for its fleet from its local ATS Euromaster centre in Brecon.

"It's not often you can claim to get a free ride in this world – and never one with a tailored livery," laughs Clive Price, transport director Russell Price.

"We are absolutely delighted to have won the competition and will make sure we get the most out of the vehicle," he says, adding that he prefers Scania trucks because the firm gets good service, its workshop knows them and residuals are good.

Price went for a top of the range Scania R Highline with the 450bhp SCR (selective catalytic reduction) only engine, and equipped with weight-saving 19.5in mini mid-lifts, Alcoa Durabrite alloys and a PTO.

"It's to our own specification," explains Price, explaining that he had already ordered two identical such trucks from Scania, and this third free tractor will now replace another older vehicle in the fleet.

"These are our first new trucks: we've always bought used trucks in the past but we didn't want an EGR [exhaust gas recirculation] engine at Euro 6. So we went for new and specified the 450 with SCR only. Our trucks must last us 10 years and I can't see EGR lasting that long."

As for the tyres, Price says: "We have bought Michelin tyres for years because of the outstanding results we see, both on and off road.

"The tyre life we get is second to none and there's no compromise on fuel savings, which is important for a fleet like ours which clocks up so many miles every week."

The new truck is also an opportunity for the team at Clive Price Transport to test its first set of 315/70 R 22.5 tyres.

"We have fitted 295/80s for years, but I have heard good reports about these new tyres so it will be interesting to see what results we get," says Price.

"And the Michelin team is going to help us with measuring that as well. Our luck is definitely in."
