CM Downton adds 100 custom-designed trailers from Tiger 11 July 2019

Logistics operator CM Downton is taking delivery of a 100-strong order of tri-axle curtainsider trailers from Tiger Trailers, with the custom-designed trailers supporting a major contract win in the paper sector.

The EN12642-XL rated tri-axle chassis incorporates a bespoke structural design to meet Downton’s unladen weight requirement of 7,250kg, achieved by a revised ‘neck’ design and circular cut-outs located at low stress areas in the chassis beams.

The hot-dipped galvanised chassis provides increased durability – Tiger says this can add “decades” to the lifespan compared with a conventional painted chassis. Downton’s new curtainsiders also feature a front-mounted aerodynamic dome to boost fuel economy and reduce emissions.

Tiger has also partnered with Tata Steel on steel components which are twice as strong as the high-strength steel typically used in trailer chassis construction, without adding weight. The result, says the trailer maker, is one of the lightest 4.35m tri-axle clearspan curtainsiders currently available in the UK.

The latest order brings Downton’s Tiger fleet to 425.

“We are happy to continue our longstanding relationship with Tiger Trailers as one of the main suppliers of trailers to CM Downton,” said Zac Brown, operations director at Downton.

He adds: “The partnership works well, with Tiger delivering bespoke solutions to ensure we have a fleet perfectly tailored to our national operational requirements.”
