Dairy Crest goes for quieter life with Mercedes Sprinters05 January 2010

Dairy Crest has added 80 Mercedes Sprinter 311CDI chassis cabs to its fleet of milk&more distribution vehicles, replacing older units from a rival brand when they hit the streets in March.

In its first order for several years, the company chose the cabs to help deliver to more than 1.3 million homes around the UK, because of its Euro 5-compliant engine and Mercedes' ECO-Start system, which helps to reduce fuel consumption and noise levels, by cutting off the engine after the vehicle is stationary for more than two seconds.

Prior to placing the order with Gerrard Mann Commercial Vehicles in Birmingham, the chilled products delivery firm embarked on an evaluation programme, during which drivers achieved fuel savings of around 2mpg over a 45-mile cycle.

"As a company, we are doing all we can to reduce our carbon footprint, so the fact that Mercedes-Benz offers a vehicle that meets the latest Euro 5 emissions standard was a definite 'plus'," says Trevor Thompson, fleet procurement manager at Dairy Crest.

The aluminium milk float bodies have been supplied by Solomon Commercials, and include insulated chiller boxes and LEDs for dark winter mornings.
