Actros Titan joins Cadzow special types truck fleet 21 July 2010

Abnormal load specialist Cadzow Heavy Haulage has a new flagship – a Mercedes-Benz Actros Titan plated for Special Types operation at 250 tonnes gcw.

The truck left the Mercedes-Benz plant at Wörth as a specially prepared 6x4 tractor unit powered by a 448kW (609hp) V8 engine. It was then sent to Titan Spezialfahrzeugbau GmbH, of Backnang, near Stuttgart, where it was converted to 8x4 specification.

As well as adding the extra steering axle and other ancillary equipment for heavy haulage, Titan reinforced the chassis. Pressure on space also necessitated relocation of the air tanks, batteries, exhaust stack and hydraulic transmission coolers behind the cab, along with the 900-litre fuel and 95-litre AdBlue tanks.

It also has a Long Distance sleeper cab, with extras including air-conditioning, comfort suspension seats for both the driver and co-driver, tinted windows, a pop-up electric roof, a refrigerator and a CD-Radio with Bluetooth phone connection.

Cadzow managing director Jim Macauley says: "Our Titans have done us proud, since we bought our first two from Western Commercial in 2003.. They've always been man enough for the job and very reliable. Our only outlays havie been on the kind of wear and tear items you would expect."

And he adds: "There's no doubt that Mercedes-Benz makes a good heavy truck, which explains why most of the guys in this very specialised business choose to run them."

Cadzow is based in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, and operates three other Actros Titans. Supplied by Bellshill dealer Western Commercial, the latest truck is its first from the new-generation range launched last year, and cost around £180,000.
