Grant helps Cummins to fire on all cylinders 13 April 2010

The world's largest independent designer and manufacturer of diesel engines is planning to develop next generation Euro 6 clean diesels for ultra-low emission commercial vehicles in the Tees Valley.

Cummins says its decision to develop the new Euro 6 engines at its Darlington technical centre was helped by the conferral of a £600,000 grant from One North East, under the Tees Valley Industrial Programme (TVIP).

Jonathan Atkinson, Cummins chief engineer, explains that the grant will help the company to expand its product development operations and indicates that it will help to safeguard 135 jobs and lead to the creation of more.

"This grant will allow us to expand the capability of our Darlington Tech Centre and gives an opportunity to integrate even more closely with key UK and European-based vehicle manufacturers," says Atkinson.

"We are grateful to One North East for its support, which will help Cummins and our vehicle partners maintain a strong market position," he adds.

The Darlington team will now lead design and development of all major engine and aftertreatment components and will also optimise these systems for fuel efficiency and low emissions. In excess of 80,000 hours of engine testing will be completed in its facility and more than two million road miles will be driven to refine and validate the technology.
