Merseyside firm is Britain’s top haulier 19 July 2010

Merseyside firm Abbey Road Tanks has been voted Haulier of the Year, the most coveted award in the UK road transport industry.

The company will now go on to represent the UK in the 'European Transport Company of the Year Award 2011' in Brussels next February.

Steve Granite, managing director, and his co-directors at the Bootle company, lifted the trophy in front of an audience of 1,400 industry figures at the MT Awards on Tuesday 13 July.

In the most hotly contested category of the awards the judges declared Abbey Road Tanks to be: "an outstanding road haulage company showing strong financial results and a commitment to professionalism, customer care, safety, training and the environment".

Said Granite: "To win this award at our first attempt and against strong competition from some of the UK's leading transport companies is a credit to everybody working in the company. It really was a 'one team' effort involving every employee right across the company.

Founded in 1990, the company today runs a fleet of 130 DAFs and 160 trailers, mostly tankers, although it has recently added 20 trailers for palletised loads. It specialises in the transport of foodstuffs from vegetable oils to chocolate and sugar, which it does throughout the UK for a number of the country's leading food producers.
