Hermes trials fuel saving for efficiency drive 28 April 2010

Hermes is testing two rigids with Bevan21 aerodynamic bodies as part of its of an initiative to achieve operating efficiencies and cut carbon emissions.

Carole Woodhead, CEO of Hermes in the UK, says that the firm will trial the streamlined bodies on its radial van fleet, to assess the 15% fuel savings claims – with a view to using them on a further 18 vehicles currently on order.

"We are committed to utilising emissions-saving technology, such as the Bevan21 bodies, to meet our target of reducing the company's carbon footprint by 50% by 2020," says Woodhead.

"Any investment needs to make sound business and environmental sense, so we are looking for solutions that can deliver green benefits along with operational savings," she adds.

The aerodynamic bodies, designed to reduce wind resistance but maintain internal volume, have been fitted to one 7.5-and one 12-tonne chassis. Features include a curved roof, moulded air deflector and cab collar.

These vehicles are among 28 vans acquired on six-year contract hire from Ryder as part of Hermes fleet replacement programme, running with the myHermes branding.
