New V8 range from Scania includes Euro 6-ready EEV model 19 April 2010

Boasting what Scania is calling the most powerful truck in the world, the Swedish manufacturer has introduced a seriously updated V8-powered range of vehicles.

Jonas Hofstedt, senior vice president powertrain at the Volkswagen-owned company, says it is based on the modular engine platform and technologies used on Scania's newest inline 5- and 6-cylinder engines, while also sharing numerous features and components with its existing V8s.

There are four power outputs – 500, 560, 620 and 730bhp – the largest unit being offered with 3,500Nm of torque, accessed via Scania's Opticruise automated transmission, and meeting EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle) standards.

"Now Scania has all the technical solutions and also the engine platform needed to fulfil the Euro 6 emission standards that go into effect at the end of 2013," insists Hofstedt.

Beyond that, Scania says the power choices were made to provide drivers with a smoother driving experience than its inline six cylinder configuration – specifically highlighting reduced torsional vibration.

The trucks use an updated version of the XPI common rail injection system. On the 9- and 13-litre models, it harnesses the conventional two pumps feeding the injectors, but on the 16-litre version it adopts an updated layout with three pumps and an upgraded pressure system.

A CGI cylinder block has also been used to reduce weight, while a stronger crankshaft allows higher combustion pressures.

Based on the award-winning Scania R-series, from a styling perspective the new range of trucks features a redesigned exterior and interior that adds more driver comfort.

Scania's existing V8 trucks account for more than half of total sales volume above 600 hp. With a fourth power rating to choose from, Hofstedt says the firm's V8 customers now have a "wide choice that nobody can match".
