SDC secures early EC trailer type approval 14 September 2010

SDC is the first major trailer manufacturer in the UK to secure European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) from the VCA, the UK's designated approval authority.

Mark Cuskeran, managing director of SDC Trailers, explains that gaining ECWVTA confirms that its trailers meet the performance, environmental and safety standards – providing future-proofed product ahead of the 2012 deadline.

The type approval applies to a 13.7m curtainsider and covers aspects including brakes, installation of lighting and light signalling devices, rear protection devices, lateral protection, spray suppression systems, tyres and couplings.

"Over the last three years, we've made a significant investment in working towards securing full type approval," says Cuskeran. "We decided in 2007 that it was important to gain approval ahead of the application date as it would allow us and our customers to get used to the new regulations before they become compulsory. It also allows us to increase our export sales into mainland Europe."

He also indicates that it may be possible to include many different trailer types under the one SDC type approved umbrella – even including box vans, tippers and flatbeds on the same approval. They can simply be listed as versions and variants of the main type, he asserts.
