Hermes saves with route optimisation software15 March 2010

Home delivery outfit Hermes says it has saved more than £300,000 from its annual transport costs, thanks in part to software used to plan optimal routing for vehicles.

The Multi Depot software from Paragon is now being used at 14 of Hermes' 18 depots, and William Ellis, network development manager at Hermes, says he expects software deployment at the remaining site to, prompt a further drop in expenditure.

Multi Depot plans routes, allowing for narrow delivery windows of up to four hours. The software has also enabled Hermes to assign appropriate vehicles to specific routes, allowing for an improved fleet management setup.

"Paragon has provided us with a range of tactical benefits already. It helps us with developing very accurate routes and has already paid for itself several times over," comments Ellis.

"It is a good, easy to use, and functional solution for our operation. The software allows us to reduce our mileage – and this amounts to an average cost saving of £162 a year for every mile we don't drive on a daily basis."
