Double first for BP Gas, with I-Sync and Dynafleet 09 July 2010

Six new Volvo FL 4x2 rigid tankers that have entered service with BP Gas are the first in the fleet to be equipped with Dynafleet telematics and Volvo's I-Sync automated gearbox.

According to BP Gas logistics support engineer Willie Anderson, improving fuel economy and optimising driver safety are the main reasons for their introduction.

Dynafleet, he says, is being used as part of Volvo's Total Transport Solution, which uses tracking technology for driver training – to improve fuel efficiency as well as vehicle and load security. It is also linked to the digital tachograph to monitor driver's hours and availability.

Meanwhile, Anderson says I-Sync was specified to help drivers concentrate on safe driving, whether in crowded city streets or delivering in the Highlands.

"We've operated Volvo's since 1984 when BP took over MacGas," says Anderson, adding: "Of all the manufacturers we approached in the purchasing round, they were the hungriest for the business and keenest to meet all our requirementst."

The delivery of the new FLs takes the number of Volvo's in the fleet to 60 out of a total of 80 vehicles, and the supplier was Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, from its Glasgow West dealership at Cardonald.

All are on five-year repair and maintenance contract, with the emphasis on maximising vehicle utilisation, with inspections and scheduled work carried out overnight or at the end of shifts.
