Heavy aviation crash recovery loader returns 9mpg19 August 2010

Aviation recovery specialist Recovair reports that its first Volvo tractor unit for European heavy recovery work, involving crashed light aircraft and helicopters, is returning 9mpg.

The Volvo FH-480 6x2 tag-axle tractor has been in service since last December, working with a semi-low loader King trailer from the firm's base at Fairoaks airport in Surrey.

Company boss Tim Wakeman explains that it's fitted with a 45 tonne/metre crane, and the truck and trailer combination "tips the scales at 27.5 tonnes before we even put an aircraft on it".

Hence his delight at 9mpg, which he reckons is "a big improvement" on the truck it's replaced.

Wakeman bought the tractor unit from the Hayes outlet of Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London on an HP deal through Volvo Financial Services. It is being maintained on a Volvo service contract.
