Tees Valley takes delivery of bespoke Whale and Red Forge tanker 25 October 2010

A new GullyWhale Plus medium volume combination (MVC) tanker supplied to Tees Valley's Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has been equipped with a modified axle load cell system.

Developed by on-vehicle weighing systems specialist Red Forge, the Omniweigh equipment was selected to reduce the risk of vehicle overloading.

Whale Tankers managing director Mark Warmington explains that the system was fitted under the rear tank tip pivot and front foot of the tank on this twin compartment, 1,800 gallon MVC. Doing so means the system is active all the time, without the operator needing to tip the tank.

The MVC, which is mounted on an 18 tonne gvw Mercedes Axor 1824 4x2 rigid chassis, features cells that have been modified to fit this vehicle. The usual Omniweigh 12in load cell, with its four mounting bolts, has been adapted to an 18in long cell with five bolts.

Warmington says that not only does this provide greater stability on the vehicle, but it also benefits from the same height increase as normal.

Now, as the gully emptying tank fills up, when either of the axles reaches 90% of plated weight, the visual display in the cab shows a solid F (front) and/or R (rear).

"Whilst we work with many system suppliers, it is pleasing to have helped deliver what is a bespoke load cell system for this particular customer, states Warmington.

"There is an increasing trend for end users to specify this type of technology and we feel it is a trend that will continue to gain momentum in the future," he adds.
