Computer firm drives up capacity with 26-tonne Mercedes New Actros04 August 2014

Computer equipment distributor Paul Ponsonby has taken delivery of a 26-tonne Mercedes-Benz New Actros drawbar rigid, with bespoke body, to deliver large, fragile products across the UK and Europe.

Supplied by dealer S&B Commercials, the New Actros 2536 LnR ENA has a 2.5m StreamSpace cab and 360bhp, Euro 6 engine, with PowerShift 3 automated transmission.

The low-height chassis incorporates a rear-steer, lifting axle for improved manoeuvrability. As with all other vehicles in the Birmingham-based operator's fleet, the truck is fully air suspended and fitted with padded rails, load locks and a high-capacity, full closure tail-lift – in this case, a 3-tonne capacity Dhollandia unit.

The insulated body and drawbar trailer are by Ekeri.

The 26-tonner is the largest vehicle on Ponsonby's 12-strong fleet. Most are 18-tonners although the line-up includes two 12-tonners, one of which is a Euro 6 Atego.

Founder Paul Ponsonby says the New Actros will help his firm meet increased demand: "It allows us to handle larger consignments and back haul to the UK more efficiently.

"I'm pleased with the early fuel consumption figures, as it's already returning in excess of 12 mpg."
