Construction contractor builds fuel-efficient fleet with Mercedes vans18 June 2014

Construction contractor MJ Abbott has extended its 60-strong fleet with 13 new Mercedes vehicles, including Sprinters, Citans and a pair of Sprinter 4x4 panel vans.

Supplied by dealer Rygor, the Salisbury-based contractor's latest additions are mostly 3.5-tonne Sprinter 313 CDIs.

Four are standard panels vans, and the line-up also includes the two 4x4s as well as a Dualiner crew variant with a second row of seats, and a chassis cab with dropside body. Completing the order are three Citan 109 CDIs and a pair of Vito 116 CDI Dualiners.

"The 4x4 Sprinters will certainly improve our off-road capability, as they offer a much higher carrying capacity than our other four wheel-drive vehicles," says technical director Adrian Abbott.

The dropsider, he adds, has a longer body than the van it replaces, so offers more versatility as a delivery vehicle.

Meanwhile, this is the first time MJ Abbott has ordered the Citan. "We'll be monitoring the performance of our first Citans closely, to see how they shape up against our established small vans. First impressions are certainly very positive though," states Abbott.

The vehicles will be maintained in-house by MJ Abbott's engineers. All have been assigned to the company's civil engineering, electrical, water and wastewater engineering teams.
