Curtainsider trailers fuel enthusiasm for Montracon 04 August 2011

Evaluations of Montracon trailers by a pet products distributor are returning impressive fuel saving figures, according to the company.

"Early returns from in-service trials carried out with six axle artics featuring aerodynamic Montracon curtainsiders indicate fuel savings of up to 8.3%, compared with the standard units in our 15-strong trailer fleet," states Nigel Caseley, director of logistics at Vital Pet Products.

Delivered recently, the ten 13.6m-long, postless, straight frame Montracon trailers are pulled by MAN tractor units, operated by the company.

Caseley says that the trailer's air dam and front canted roof promote attached rearward air flow. Then, at the rear, where the roof slopes down between the cant rails, there is a line of vortex generators that channel flow into the base drag area – immediately behind the rear trailer doors – so reducing vehicle drag.

Similarly, side skirts promote attached air flow and direct it along the trailer sides, reducing turbulence and directing the flow into the base drag area.

Vital Pet Products operates 10 tractors and 15 trailers in addition to five 26-tonne and 95 18-tonne rigids. All distribute pet products from its six warehouses to wholesale customers throughout the country.
