DAF LF Construction shows its mettle for recycling business26 February 2014

Scrap metal and recycling business Smith Metals has added three of DAF's new LF Construction trucks to its seven-strong DAF fleet.

The latest trucks are powered by the 6.7-litre six-cylinder Euro 6 Paccar PX-7 engine, with Smith Metals opting for the 220bhp version.

The 3.75m wheelbase LFs are fitted with Hyva 2012XL skiploading equipment having a 12-tonne lift capacity. The telescopic side arms can lift up to 12 tonnes at a reach of 2.95m when closed, and 8 tonnes at 4.4m when extended.

When lifting a skip at an angle, the arms can be operated independently, as can the rear stabiliser jacks. Hyva's Autosheet system was also specified, powered by hydraulics, rather than electric motor, for smoother operation.

Company site manager Jason Wilson says that the performance of other DAF models in the fleet was a key factor in his decision:

"Ours is a demanding business and we need trucks that are durable and reliable, which our DAFs have proved to be," he says.

"The new LF model also looks good... They came out of the factory painted metallic grey and to a very high standard of finish, requiring us only to have the Hyva equipment fitted and the vinyls applied."

Supplied by dealer Lancashire DAF, the trucks are now making up to 10 drops a day, collecting scrap metal and other waste materials from sites within a 100-mile radius of Smith Metals' Bolton base. Typically, they carry 8 cubic yard skips, with a potential payload of 9 tonnes, but can also handle skips and containers up to 16 cubic yards.
