DAF unveils lightweight, fuel-efficient rear axle 11 October 2019

DAF Components will be showcasing a new, lightweight driven rear axle at the forthcoming Busworld Europe event (18-23 October; Brussels).

The rear axle – with a total gear reduction of 2.05 – is said to deliver maximum performance at the lowest rpm level ever, according to the company. This reduces fuel consumption by 2% and cuts noise for passengers.

The fuel improvement is partly due to the newly developed crown wheel and pinion set, which ensures that as little energy as possible is lost to friction.

The axle is also up to 70kg lighter than any other driven rear axles for coaches and buses, says DAF. An additional bonus is that the oil in the axle body only needs to be changed once every 540,000km.

At the event, DAF will also be unveiling new Euro III and Euro V Paccar engines, which are up to 12% more efficient than their predecessors.
