Dairy Crest is first for Carrier Transicold’s Vector 1550 fridge unit 11 January 2011

Chilled dairy foods giant Dairy Crest is the first to harness Carrier Transicold's Vector 1550 all-electric trailer refrigeration unit, having placed an order for 15 on new trailers.

Trevor Thompson, category manager for Dairy Crest's commercial fleet, says the order follows a demonstration of the system at last year's IAA in Hannover.

Dairy Crest, he says, will use the Vector 1550 units to maintain tight temperature control (+/- 0.3°C) on trailers when delivering products, including Cathedral City cheddar, Clover spread, Country Life butter and milk products to supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide.

"Our new trailers have been developed to bespoke specifications by Gray and Adams and will carry temperature sensitive loads 24/7," comments Thompson.

"With such a demanding operation, it is essential we use technology that will handle this flawlessly; it was clear from our discussions with Carrier that this was the unit for us," he adds.

One key factor is the refrigeration unit's electric technology, which means fewer serviceable parts and joints than conventional alternatives – so allowing for increased reliability and uptime, reduced refrigerant leak rates and very good pull-down and temperature control.

Dairy Crest estimates that its new trailers will remain on the fleet for seven years, with each trailer covering approximately 180,000 km per year. They join a fleet totalling more than 3,500 vehicles, including 250 tractor units, 400 trailers, 400 rigid trucks and 2,500 vans. Sixty per cent of its refrigerated fleet relies on Carrier Transicold.
