DfT and LowCVP co-operate on renewable transport fuels 01 October 2014

A transport energy task force established by DfT (Department for Transport) and LowCVP (Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership) is to examine options for meeting the RED (Renewable Energy Directive) 2020 renewable fuel target.

The first meeting was held last Monday (29 September 2014) with representatives from: environmental NGOs; oil, biofuel and advanced fuels industries; agricultural industry; alternative fuels sectors; investors; and the automotive industry.

Other government departments involved include the Treasury and DECC (Department for Energy and Climate Change).

The task force will be looking at appropriate mechanisms and fuel choices it needs to ensure that the UK meets its 2020 RED target for transport sustainably and cost effectively.

It will also examine how to maximise the most sustainable renewable fuels alongside opportunities for UK industrial growth, including in terms of biofuel technologies and infrastructure.

The establishment of a collaborative body to look at low carbon road transport fuels was among key recommendations of LowCVP's report 'Investing in the Low Carbon Journey', released at its annual conference in July.

Chris Mottershead, of King's College, London, is the chair of the task force's steering group.

The Transport Energy Task Force is due to report findings to DfT by March 2015.
