DfT releases details for new LST trial allocation06 March 2017

The Department for Transport has now released details for operators wishing to apply for an allocation of 1,000 permits as part of the longer semi-trailer (LST) trial extension, announced at the end of January.

The extension will take the number of LSTs from 1,800 to 2,800 over the next 12 months and the trial has been extended for five years. The new allocation covers both 14.6m and 15.65m variants.

Operators can have a maximum of 20% of their fleets as LSTs; allocations will be based on semi-trailer and LST units operated at the time of application.

For example, for those operators with two or fewer semi-trailers (including LSTs), the maximum allocation will be one LST. For those with 3-10 semi-trailers, the maximum allocation will be two LSTs. And for fleets with 11 or more semi-trailers, the allocation will be up to 20% of the total fleet, but will be capped initially at 50.

The DfT guidance emphasises that applications must not be speculative: “We would expect operators to use this allocation and place firm orders with manufacturers to obtain the longer semi-trailers within six weeks of obtaining the allocation... We encourage operators to apply only when they believe they require LSTs.Operators will be able to put LSTs on the road from 1 May 2017.”

Operators wishing to apply should email the DfT at freight@dft.gsi.gov.uk. Click the link below to see the full guidance document.
