Double-drive Antos packs a punch for Cawleys27 February 2017

Waste management firm Cawleys has acquired its first Mercedes-Benz Antos – a double-drive 26-tonner with ClassicSpace M-Cab and extra storage space behind the seats.

The Luton-based operator’s new Antos 2632 was specified with the 7.7-litre, straight-six 320bhp engine driving though the eight-speed Mercedes PowerShift AMT (automated manual gearbox).

It has also been fitted with a Heil Powerlink compactor body for collecting commercial waste in large wheeled bins.

“The Antos is better suited to this application than the low-entry Mercedes-Benz Econic it has replaced, because it entails covering greater distances and making fewer stops than required for a domestic waste collection round,” explains Cawleys head of waste collection Phil Gudgeon.

“We spoke to other operators before placing our order, and it’s clear that Mercedes-Benz trucks have an excellent reputation for reliability, which will be crucial,” he continues.

“The truck has been extremely well received by our drivers and early indications are that it will be significantly more fuel efficient than its predecessor.”

Gudgeon says the latter is also important to Cawleys because, as well as reducing operating costs, it helps to minimise “the impact of our business on the environment”.

And he adds that the firm has been “very impressed” with the service from dealer Intercounty Truck & Van.

The new Antos is the subject of a five-year Mercedes-Benz R&M contract, and is being inspected and serviced at Intercounty Truck & Van’s Toddington workshop.
