Driver defect reporting is key: traffic commissioners 07 July 2015

Having an effective method of reporting defects should be a key part of any vehicle operator’s maintenance regime – and that should start with understanding what to look for..

So say the traffic commissioners in their most recent 'Moving On' blog, adding that focusing on this is also a good way to make sure drivers know which defects to look for.

And they make the point that walkaround checks matter, stating that 85% of roadworthiness infringements could have been avoided if drivers did a competent walkaround check before starting their journeys.

Operators are often called to public inquiries because drivers have missed defects, or in some cases haven't done checks at all. If you audit your drivers regularly, you'll know how well they're keeping on top of this vital work, suggest the traffic commissioners.

"Your drivers aren't expected to be mechanics but their vehicles should be in a good roadworthy condition before they go out on the road," they insist.

"A reminder or re-education at toolbox talks, or on a one-to-one basis, about the importance of walkaround checks could prevent a prohibition or further investigation."
