Driver feedback puts Stralis in the frame for paint maker 08 May 2014

Architectural coatings business PPG Industries has ordered 21 Iveco Stralis Hi-Way 6x2 twin-steer tractor units, after trialling demonstrators from three alternative manufacturers and evaluating driver feedback.

Each truck was put through the same evaluation process, says Gary Morton, PPG's transport operations manager, adding: "The Stralis Hi-Way came out on top. Driver feedback was very positive; they had a lot of praise for the overall comfort and internal space inside the cab."

The trucks all include Iveco's Driving Style Evaluation tool, giving the drivers real-time feedback on their performance.

The tractors also have the factory-fitted Eco Pack, designed to deliver additional fuel-savings.

That pack includes: EcoSwitch, which uses vehicle weight information to optimise drivetrain operations; EcoFleet mode, which automatically adjusts to vehicle loading to fine-tune fuel economy; Energy tyres to reduce rolling resistance; and optimised drive axle ratios.

Operating with a mix of Montracon and SDC tri-axle trailers, the Stralis Hi-Ways will be used to deliver pallets of paint and decorating products across the country from PPG's factory in West Yorkshire.

The vehicles are expected to be in operation for six years, with each one covering 50,000 miles per year, and will be serviced in house by PPG engineers.

The company has operated Stralis vehicles for more than a decade and local dealer Northern Commercials was invited to tender.
