Efficiency takes off for runway repair firm with Allison automatic transmission20 February 2015

Airport and highway maintenance contractor Allied Infrastructure Management is reporting greater efficiency and reliability since fitting an Allison 1000 Series automatic transmission into one of its Iveco Daily extruder vehicles.

The 6.5-tonne van is specially equipped for concrete and joint sealing and maintains a 2mph speed to match the walking pace of the operator. Previously, with the manual transmission, the driver had to constantly depress the clutch to achieve this.

Now, with the Allison fully automatic transmission, there is no risk of clutch wear or vehicle downtime due to overheating.

Tricia Green, business development manager for Allied Infrastructure UK, says the improvement has been "significant", adding: "Efficiency and reliability have increased markedly.

"Our operatives find the slow, even and smooth pace required for perfect delivery of the sealant far easier to achieve."

The solution was recommended by Iveco dealer Northern Commercials, which has carried out other similar installations.

Allied is planning to repeat the installation in its other extruder vehicles.
