Eurocargo rises to the challenge for Allied Bakeries 09 July 2013

An additional 73 Iveco Eurocargo rigids have been added to Allied Bakeries' fleet to support a new nationwide contract.

The latest trucks are all Eurocargo 140E18Ps – 14-tonne rigids fitted with Ecostream teardrop box bodies, manufactured by Don-Bur, bespoke wind deflectors and cab collars, and with tuck-under Dhollandia tail-lifts.

All have the FPT Industrial 3.9-litre Tector engine, which is capable of developing up to 182bhp at 2,700rpm and up to 610Nm of torque between 1,300 and 2,100rpm.

They also have engine immobilisers as standard, together with a programmable speed limiter up to 90km/h. And, as with all 4x2 Eurocargo trucks, the 140E18Ps have the two-pedal automated EuroTronic transmission – again as standard – complete with fuel economy software.

Chris Davies, fleet engineer at Allied Bakeries, says the new Eurocargos will be used for a combination multi-drop urban distribution to smaller retailers, as well as deliveries to major multiples.

Each vehicle was specified for its ability to transport up to 540 baskets of bread, carrying out several drops per day, he says.

"We put this order out to tender and Iveco came out top, based on the Eurocargo's competitive whole life costs," states Davies.

"Unladen chassis weight has gradually increased on all marques of commercial vehicle with the introduction of new technology and emissions legislation, so we took the decision to step up from 12 tonne rigids to 14 tonners," he reveals.

"It suits our business and the types of deliveries we make, while cutting down on vehicle journeys."
