Factory-bodied DAFs prove very affordable for window makers 15 December 2010

Blackpool based Affordable Window Group has replaced most of its delivery fleet with 16 DAF LF45s, with factory-fitted boxvan bodies.

The UPVC window trade manufacturer, which also trades as 21st Century PVC, says it chose the DAFs following good experience with two it was already running.

Operations director John McVey believes that having both chassis and body produced in one location would lead to greater consistency of finish, as well as simplifying the ordering process and after-sales support.

He also says it reduced lead times by around three weeks.

"Now we have vehicles with cabs that are in a factory finished white that is exactly the same white as the paint on the body," says McVey. "And I know too that the same quality checking processes that are followed when assembling the chassis are also in place during the manufacture and fitting of the body."

For Affordable Windows, cube is more an issue than weight, so the 4.65 metre wheelbase LF45s, providing a 6.1 metre body with the sleeper-cab were ideal at 36 cubic metres load space.

Barn type rear doors also allow easy loading and unloading of even its largest items, while an adjustable roof spoiler helps overcome wind resistance and improve fuel efficiency.

McVey says he went for the sleeper cab, because the company makes deliveries to all parts of the UK and drivers can be away several nights.

Power for these trucks comes from the 4.5 litre FR103 engine, rated at 160bhp, matched to a five-speed manual gearbox and providing a comfortable 21.3bhp/tonne power to weight ratio. This engine is also Euro 5 compliant, so drops into the London LEZ are not a problem.

The DAFs have been acquired on a three year operating lease through Paccar Financial, under a full R&M contract with work being carried out by local DAF service dealer Simmons Commercials of Poulton le Fylde.
